Container Shipping Rates from Vietnam to Cyprus by Sea 2026

Oct 9
9 min read

Container shipping rates from Vietnam to Cyprus consist of ocean freight, route surcharges (bunker, Red Sea, EU ETS) and local charges at both ends. There is currently no published direct service from Cat Lai, Hai Phong or Da Nang to Limassol, so cargo usually moves via transshipment. In early October 2026, the Asia – Mediterranean index stood at around USD 3,600–3,700 per 40-foot container.

I. What Does the Container Shipping Rate from Vietnam to Cyprus Include?

A sea freight quotation to Cyprus has 3 layers: ocean freight, route surcharges and local charges at both ports. Comparing two quotations without separating these 3 layers makes it easy to pick a "cheap" price that is missing surcharges.

Charge

Description

Notes specific to the Cyprus route

Ocean freight

Sea freight from the port of loading in Vietnam to Limassol

If transshipped, ask whether the rate includes the feeder leg to Limassol

Bunker surcharge (BAF)

Fluctuates with marine fuel (bunker) prices

Adjusted by carriers periodically; check the validity on the quotation

Red Sea/Suez risk surcharges

Surcharges due to security risks in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden

Example from MSC: Piracy Risk Surcharge USD 55/TEU + Suez Canal Surcharge USD 36/TEU for many Mediterranean ports from 19/10/2026; Limassol is not on the published port list; ask the carrier which surcharges apply to Limassol when quoting

EU ETS

Carbon emissions surcharge when vessels call at EU ports

From 2026, 100% of reportable emissions apply; voyages between a non-EU port and an EU port count at 50%. The USD/TEU amount varies by carrier and H-Cargo states it clearly on the quotation

GRI / PSS

General rate increase or peak season surcharge

In late September 2026, some carriers announced rate increases for late October

Local charges in Vietnam

THC, documentation fee, seal, telex release, manifest filing fee…

According to each carrier's tariff

Local charges in Limassol

Destination THC and cargo collection fees at the port of discharge

Set by the carrier/agent in Cyprus, confirmed at the time of quotation

II. What Are Current Reference Freight Rates on the Asia – Mediterranean Route?

In early October 2026, public indices for the China/Far East – Mediterranean route stood at around USD 3,600–3,700/FEU and were falling. These are market indices, not Vietnam – Cyprus rates and not H-Cargo's quoted prices.

Why is there no public Vietnam – Cyprus rate? No Vietnam – Limassol service has been published, so cargo to Cyprus most likely moves via a transshipment port; the rate depends on the hub, the feeder carrier and the shipping date. An accurate rate is only available per shipment: port of loading, container type, cargo-ready date and commodity.

III. Which Port Does Cargo to Cyprus Arrive At, and Is Transshipment Required?

Container cargo to Cyprus arrives at the port of Limassol (UN/LOCODE CYLMS), and for cargo from Vietnam, the transshipment option must be planned in advance. According to public data checked by H-Cargo on 05/10/2026, no carrier has published a direct service from Vietnamese ports to Limassol.

Port of Limassol:

  • The container terminal is operated by Eurogate Container Terminal Limassol; 89% of volume is imports and 11% exports (CBN, 15/04/2025).

  • Carriers serving Limassol include MSC, CMA CGM, Maersk, ONE, COSCO and Evergreen (same CBN source).

  • DP World Limassol operates the multipurpose terminal (bulk, general cargo, ro-ro, passengers), not the container terminal (Seatrade Maritime).

Port of Larnaca: a multipurpose port managed by the Cyprus Ports Authority; its cargo list does not mention containers (Cyprus Shipping Association). For container cargo from Asia, Limassol is the port of discharge to use.

Transshipment: An example of a regional feeder leg: CMA CGM has expanded its EGAL service to call at Limassol with the rotation Alexandria – Limassol – Piraeus – Thessaloniki – Malta – Annaba, 5 vessels, total capacity of about 1,300 TEU (Nowlun, 13/06/2026). The specific hub for cargo from Vietnam and each carrier's transit time are confirmed by H-Cargo based on vessel schedules when quoting.

No deliveries to Northern Cyprus via the Republic of Cyprus system. The Republic of Cyprus has declared the ports of Famagusta (Ammochostos), Karavostasi and Kyrenia closed since 1974; importing, exporting or transshipping goods via ports in the area occupied by the Turkish army is a violation (Cyprus Customs Department). Maersk also states that there is no cargo to/from the north of the island via Limassol (Maersk Cyprus).

IV. How Are the Red Sea Situation and Surcharges Affecting the Cyprus Route?

Asia – Europe/Mediterranean services are partially returning to the Suez Canal, but have not yet returned to normal and risk surcharges remain. For cargo to Cyprus, this directly affects transit time and total cost.

  • Partial return to Suez: the Gemini Cooperation (Maersk, Hapag-Lloyd) is moving AE11 (from 19/9), AE5 (from 21/9), ME2 (from 24/9) and AE12 (date not announced) back to the Suez routing, in addition to AE15 and AE19 already using Suez; these services cover the Asia – Mediterranean trade (WorldCargoNews, 15/09/2026).

  • Degree of normalization: about 27% in September 2026 across both directions of Asia – Europe; the Asia → Europe direction only about 13–25%. Transiting Suez saves 14–21 days compared with sailing around the Cape of Good Hope (ChemAnalyst, 18/09/2026).

  • Risks remain: according to Freightos, Houthi forces recently seized a port and an island right at the Bab el-Mandeb strait (Freightos, 15/09/2026).

  • Rates falling but surcharges rising: Drewry notes that more Suez transits are adding capacity and pushing rates down (DCN, 02/10/2026); at the same time, MSC is extending its Piracy Risk Surcharge of USD 55/TEU and Suez Canal Surcharge of USD 36/TEU to about 40 more Mediterranean and North African ports from 19/10/2026 (MSC, 30/09/2026).

  • EU ETS: from 2026 carriers bear 100% of emissions obligations (2024: 40%, 2025: 70%); voyages between an EU port and a non-EU port count 50% of emissions (Hapag-Lloyd, 11/2025). Cyprus is an EU member, so cargo to Limassol is covered.

When receiving a quotation to Cyprus, ask 3 things: whether the mother vessel goes via Suez or around the Cape of Good Hope; whether risk and ETS surcharges are included; and how long the rate is valid.

V. What Should You Note When Shipping to Cyprus?

  1. State the correct destination port: the booking and B/L must clearly state Limassol (CYLMS), Republic of Cyprus. Do not accept cargo with delivery in the north of the island.

  2. Send the SI early to meet the ENS deadline: for ocean containers from Asia, the ENS must be filed at least 24 hours before loading starts at the non-EU port (Hapag-Lloyd FAQ). If the SI is late or incomplete, the carrier cannot file the ENS on time before loading.

  3. Ask about the hub and feeder schedule: transshipped cargo may wait for a feeder at the hub; know where the hub is and how often connecting sailings run to Limassol before promising a delivery date to the buyer.

  4. Check whether the goods are subject to EU controls: steel, aluminium, fertilizers and cement are subject to CBAM; animal products must be inspected at a border control post (see section VI).

  5. Dangerous and out-of-gauge cargo: Maersk Cyprus does not accept IMO Class 1 dangerous goods; OOG cargo requires a separate approval process (Maersk Cyprus).

  6. Confirm surcharge validity: Red Sea, ETS and GRI surcharges are changing weekly; the quotation must state its validity date.

Experience from the H-Cargo team: for Mediterranean cargo via transshipment, we always ask the carrier three things before quoting: the transshipment port, the feeder schedule to the port of discharge, and which surcharges are included. This lets customers know in advance when cargo can arrive in Limassol instead of looking at a single freight figure.

VI. What Documents and Procedures Are Required to Import into Cyprus?

Cyprus has been an EU member since 01/05/2004 (European Union), so goods imported into Cyprus follow common EU customs rules. The importer in Cyprus handles clearance; Vietnamese exporters need to prepare the correct documents so the buyer can clear customs and claim EVFTA preferences.

Item

Requirement

Source

EORI number

The importer registers with Cyprus Customs (form C.1000); a customs agent may be authorized (form C.1002)

Declaration system

Import declarations are processed on the THESEAS system

ENS security declaration (ICS2)

ICS2 is mandatory for ocean cargo: the carrier (and the forwarder issuing the house B/L) must file a complete ENS before loading; an EORI is required to connect to ICS2

Commercial documents

Commercial Invoice, Packing List, B/L; confirm the full list with the importer in Cyprus

—

EVFTA proof of origin

Shipments over EUR 6,000: EUR.1 certificate issued by the competent Vietnamese authority. Shipments up to EUR 6,000: the exporter issues a statement on origin, valid for 12 months

Import duty

Look up the commodity code on TARIC, select Vietnam as origin to see the EVFTA preferential rate and applicable measures

VAT

Cyprus standard VAT rate of 19%

Controlled goods

CBAM officially applies from 01/01/2026 to cement, iron and steel, aluminium, fertilizers, electricity and hydrogen; importers of under 50 tonnes/year are exempt. Animals and animal products are inspected at a border control post (BCP)

This article does not state specific import duty rates because duties depend on the commodity code. For general rules on placing goods on the EU market, see our article on EU import regulations.

VII. Frequently Asked Questions

How long does container shipping from Vietnam to Cyprus take?

No carrier has published a transit time for the Vietnam – Limassol route. Actual time depends on the transshipment port, the feeder sailing and whether the mother vessel goes via Suez or around the Cape of Good Hope; H-Cargo confirms based on weekly schedules when quoting.

Is Cyprus in the EU, and do Vietnamese goods qualify for EVFTA preferences?

Yes. Cyprus has been an EU member since 01/05/2004. Goods of Vietnamese origin qualify for EVFTA preferences if they meet the rules of origin and have valid proof of origin (EUR.1 or a statement on origin for shipments up to EUR 6,000).

Can I ship LCL cargo to Cyprus?

LCL cargo to Cyprus usually has to be consolidated via a CFS at the transshipment port; there is no public direct LCL service from Ho Chi Minh City to Limassol. H-Cargo checks co-load options for each shipment.

Can cargo be delivered to Northern Cyprus (Famagusta, Kyrenia)?

Not via the Republic of Cyprus system. The ports of Famagusta, Karavostasi and Kyrenia were declared closed by the Republic of Cyprus in 1974, and cargo cannot move to/from the north of the island via Limassol.

Now that vessels are returning to Suez, do Red Sea surcharges still apply?

Yes. Vessels have only partially returned to Suez and security risks remain; MSC is even extending its risk and Suez surcharges to about 40 Mediterranean ports from 19/10/2026. Check each item on the quotation.

VIII. Conclusion

Container shipping rates from Vietnam to Cyprus cannot be compared by a single figure: the Asia – Mediterranean index is falling, but Red Sea risk surcharges, EU ETS and the transshipment leg to Limassol determine total cost and delivery time. Before confirming, request a quotation that separates ocean freight, surcharges, local charges, routing and validity, and prepare EVFTA proof of origin and ENS information in advance. H-Cargo provides routing advice and shipment-specific quotations through our sea freight services; for Middle East routes also passing through the Red Sea, see container shipping rates to Jordan.
