Container shipping rates from Vietnam to Costa Rica by sea consist of ocean freight, carrier surcharges (BAF, PSS, and the Panama Canal surcharge for East Coast/Caribbean routings) and local charges at both ends. Sea freight from Vietnam is transshipped to Moín (Caribbean coast) or Puerto Caldera (Pacific coast), taking around 43–64 days according to vessel schedules checked on 06/10/2026. I. What Does the Container Shipping Rate from Vietnam to Costa Rica Include?

When shipping to Costa Rica by sea, to understand how sea freight is calculated for full container loads (FCL) or less-than-container loads (LCL), shippers need to budget for the following main cost groups:

Cost group

Breakdown

Main-leg ocean freight

Cost of carrying the container from Vietnamese ports (Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Cai Mep) to international transshipment hubs.

Carrier surcharges

BAF (bunker), PSS (peak season), GRI depending on the shipping date.

Transshipment / feeder charges

Connection charges from the transshipment hub (Panama, Mexico or Asian ports) to the port of discharge in Costa Rica.

Panama Canal Surcharge (PCS)

Applied at certain times to vessels entering the Caribbean to reach the East Coast.

Local charges at both ends

THC, B/L, seal and telex release fees at the port of loading (Vietnam) and the port of discharge (Costa Rica).

II. What Are Current Sea Freight Rates from Vietnam to Central America?

There is currently no public index quoting a fixed rate for the Asia – Costa Rica lane. Actual rates fluctuate weekly depending on each carrier's pricing policy, the number of transshipment legs and space availability on connecting vessels.

IV. Transshipment Bottlenecks and the Panama Canal Surcharge

The port of discharge determines whether the vessel must transit the Panama Canal:

  • Shipping to Moín (East Coast): Vessels from Asia usually transit the Panama Canal to reach the Caribbean coast. In late September 2026, the Panama Canal raised the maximum draft for Neopanamax vessels to 49 feet, and from 15/10/2026 increased daily transits to 33 (The Maritime Executive, 28/09/2026). Besides the Panama Canal Surcharge (PCS) applied at certain times, some routings transshipped via Panama may involve a truck connection between terminals (such as from Colon to Cristobal) before loading onto the feeder vessel to Moín.

  • Shipping to Puerto Caldera (West Coast): Vessels calling at the Pacific coast do not transit the Panama Canal, helping shippers reduce the risk of PCS charges and schedule delays caused by canal congestion.

V. What Should You Note When Shipping to Costa Rica?

  • Large differences in transit time: According to schedules checked on 06/10/2026, sailings from Ho Chi Minh City to Moín vary significantly. Carriers such as Evergreen (43–45 days) and ZIM (44 days) are considerably faster than CMA CGM (53–64 days). Weigh freight cost against delivery deadlines to choose the right carrier.

  • Confirm the correct port of discharge (POD): Clarify whether the consignee's warehouse is closer to the East Coast (Moín) or the West Coast (Caldera) before booking, to avoid costly inland container trucking.

  • Consistent documents: The Commercial Invoice, Packing List and B/L must match in cargo and consignee details; ask the consignee in advance whether an original B/L or telex release is required.

Experience from the H-Cargo team: for Costa Rica, the first question we ask customers is which coast the consignee's warehouse is near. Choosing the wrong port between Moín and Caldera can add a cross-country trucking leg that often costs more than the ocean freight difference.

VI. What Documents and Procedures Are Required to Import into Costa Rica?

Customs clearance in Costa Rica is managed centrally on a digital platform:

Item

Details

Customs system

Electronic declaration via the TICA system (Tecnología de Información para el Control Aduanero); Costa Rica's Ministry of Finance is gradually moving to the new ATENA platform, so confirm the system in use with the customs broker at the port.

Clearance documents

Commercial Invoice, Bill of Lading, Packing List.

Certificate of Origin (C/O)

Provided to prove the valid origin of the goods.

Duties and fees

Import duty based on HS code, selective consumption tax (depending on the goods) and standard VAT of 13%.

VII. Frequently Asked Questions

1. How long does sea freight from Vietnam to Costa Rica take?

According to schedules checked on 06/10/2026, transit time from Ho Chi Minh City to Moín ranges from 43 to 64 days depending on the carrier. From Hai Phong to Moín it takes about 47 days, while the route to Puerto Caldera takes about 51 to 55 days.

2. Should I choose Moín or Puerto Caldera?

Moín is the main gateway handling most containerized imports into Costa Rica. However, if the consignee's warehouse is near the Pacific coast, shipping containers to Puerto Caldera helps optimize inland transport costs and avoid the Panama Canal surcharge.

3. Is LCL shipping to Costa Rica available?

Yes. LCL cargo is consolidated at CFS warehouses in Hai Phong or Ho Chi Minh City, then transshipped via international consolidation hubs before reaching the port of discharge.

VIII. Conclusion

Container shipping rates from Vietnam to Costa Rica cannot be compared by a single figure: the carrier, transshipment port and choice of discharge port determine the total cost and arrival date at Moín or Caldera. Before confirming, request a quotation that clearly separates ocean freight, surcharges, local charges, routing and validity, and align documents with the consignee.
