Oct 12
6 min read

Container shipping from Vietnam to El Salvador by sea is made up of ocean freight, carrier surcharges and local charges at both ends. Cargo from Vietnam reaches the port of Acajutla (SVACJ) on the Pacific coast via transshipment and usually does not transit the Panama Canal; transit takes about 38–57 days based on schedules checked on 06/10/2026. The H-Cargo team quotes against actual weekly sailing schedules.

Container shipping from Vietnam to El Salvador includes ocean freight, carrier surcharges and local charges at both ends. The H-Cargo team advises on the routing and transit time that fit each shipment.

I. What does container shipping to El Salvador cost include?

When calculating container shipping costs to El Salvador for full container loads (FCL) or less-than-container loads (LCL), shippers need to understand the cost groups that make up international ocean freight:

Cost group

What it covers

Main-leg ocean freight

Freight from Vietnamese ports (Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong) to an international transshipment hub and on to the port of Acajutla.

Carrier surcharges

BAF (fuel), PSS (peak season) or GRI applied period by period.

Transshipment charges

Handling and connection charges at intermediate transshipment ports in Asia (such as Shekou) and on Mexico's west coast (such as Lazaro Cardenas).

Local charges at both ends

Terminal Handling Charge (THC), bill of lading (B/L) fee, seal fee and documentation fees at the ports of loading and discharge.

Operational note: Because the voyage runs along the Pacific coast, cargo to El Salvador usually does not incur a Panama Canal Surcharge (PCS), which keeps the cost structure more stable than on routes to Central America's east coast.

II. What are current ocean freight rates to Central America?

There is currently no fixed public rate index for the Vietnam – El Salvador lane alone. Rates move week by week, driven by space demand on transpacific mother vessels and feeder rates from Mexico down to Central America.

To plan costs ahead and secure space during peak periods, shippers should contact a forwarder that specializes in the lane directly for an up-to-date all-in quote.

III. Which port does cargo to El Salvador arrive at, and is transshipment required?

El Salvador's containerized sea cargo goes mainly through the port of Acajutla (UN/LOCODE SVACJ) in Sonsonate department, managed by the Autonomous Executive Port Commission (CEPA).

Most services from Vietnam to El Salvador involve transshipment. According to schedules published on IQAX Big Schedules (checked on 06/10/2026) from Ho Chi Minh City, carrier transit times are as follows; schedules may change week by week:

IV. The Pacific coast route and the advantage of avoiding the Panama Canal

Geography is the biggest difference when shipping cargo to El Salvador compared with other Central American countries:

  • Routing along the Pacific coast: El Salvador only has a Pacific coastline and does not border the Caribbean Sea. Vessels leaving Vietnamese ports cross the North Pacific to major Mexican transshipment ports such as Lazaro Cardenas or Manzanillo, after which a feeder runs along the Central American coast to call at Acajutla.

  • Usually no Panama Canal transit: with transshipment routed via Mexico's west coast, cargo does not pass through the Panama Canal, so it is less affected by Gatun Lake water-level restrictions or the Panama Canal Surcharge (PCS). If a carrier uses a different routing, ask about this surcharge on the quote.

V. What should you watch out for when shipping to El Salvador?

When executing an export contract to El Salvador, shippers should pay attention to the following technical points:

  • Choose the route by schedule: per schedules checked on 06/10/2026, from Ho Chi Minh City ONE has sailings of about 38–39 days, while some other routings take 52–57 days. Check the CY cut-off and the detailed routing carefully before choosing a carrier.

  • Agree on free time (DEM/DET): cargo release at Acajutla can be slow in peak season; lock in free time at the destination port at booking - the exact allowance depends on the carrier and commodity.

  • Consistent documents: The Commercial Invoice, Packing List and B/L must match the electronic declaration data; ask the consignee in advance whether they need an original B/L or a telex release.

Experience from the H-Cargo team: for cargo to Central America's west coast, we usually compare routing via Mexico's west coast with other options right at the quoting stage, because transit time and surcharges to the same destination port can differ significantly. H-Cargo quotes always state the transshipment port and validity date so customers can plan ahead.

VI. What documents and procedures apply when importing into El Salvador?

Customs in El Salvador is administered by the Directorate General of Customs (Dirección General de Aduanas - DGA):

VIII. Conclusion

Before confirming, shippers should ask for a quote that separates ocean freight, surcharges, local charges, routing and validity date, and agree on the document set with the consignee.
